Wind where the projectile flies
The wind you measure at the firing point is not the wind your projectile flies through.
0.4 mil
- At 1,000 m, with a .338 LM 250-grain load, a 1 m/s error in crosswind means 40 cm at the target. Four clicks.
- Terrain, obstacles, altitude: every factor changes the wind between you and the target. A single station at the firing point cannot see it.
Why our own stations?
Nothing met our needs
What we found
A single station at the firing point, at hand height. One point, one value, to type into the app.
What we wanted
Several points along the firing line, geolocated, continuously refreshed, and fed straight into the calculation.
- So we built them. Impacts NowCast feeds the calculation with measurements instead of estimates.
Wind at 2 m is not wind at 30 m
Measure, then calculate along the flight
- Height profile. The wind measured by the station is carried up to the projectile's actual flight height, according to the terrain.
- Gradient along the shot. Several stations on the line: the wind is interpolated from the firing point to the target.
- Segments and terrain. Meadow, crops, forest: each stretch of the shot has its own roughness.
0.6 mil
when the wind goes from 3 to 8 m/s along the shot
0.8 mil
for a 20 m dip under the trajectory
0.2 mil
for a forest on one segment
.338 LM · 1,000 m · simulation results from the Impacts Ballistic engine, with identical conditions at the firing point.
Stations, Link, tablet
- The stations measure four times per second.
- The Link listens to the network and relays to the tablet.
- The tablet calculates with the wind along the trajectory.
The calculation never stops.
The station
- Ultrasonic anemometer, no moving parts
- Temperature, pressure, humidity, GPS
- Networks of 1 to 4, linked by radio, no infrastructure
- Wind refreshed 4 times per second
- Master or Node: same station, role set at configuration
- Box: two days of battery life · Solar: unlimited
The Link
- Standalone, or linked to the stations
- Brings the weather to the tablet over Bluetooth
- Unlimited number of Links per Master station
- On its own: temperature, pressure, humidity
Just one station? It works.
Start simple, refine later
One station is enough to start
Built on the experience of our multi-station networks, the app extends the measurement along the whole trajectory, using the terrain and the segments you describe.
Every extra station is one less estimate
The more faithfully your segments describe the terrain, the more accurate the calculation. Add stations along the line: each one replaces an estimate with a measurement.
